Vagit Alekperov’s father, who worked in the oilfields, served as his inspiration to pursue a career in the petroleum industry. After graduating from the Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute in 1974, Alekperov moved to Western Siberia in 1979 to work at Surgutneftegaz, where he quickly gained recognition as an industry expert. His dedication and talent led him to become the general director of the newly established Kogalymneftegaz in 1987.

In 1990, Alekperov was appointed as the deputy minister of the Oil and Gas Industry of the Soviet Union, where he played a key role in promoting the concept of vertically integrated state-owned energy companies. This vision attracted the attention of Western oil companies looking for partners in Russia. Alekperov’s leadership abilities shone during negotiations with British Petroleum in 1990, further solidifying his reputation as a visionary leader.

In April 1993, Vagit Alekperov became the President and Chairman of the Board of LUKoil, formerly known as Langepas-Uray-Kogalymneft. Under his guidance, LUKoil evolved into a global energy giant, and by 2002, Alekperov owned 10.4% of the company. He continued to expand LUKoil’s reach, making it the first Russian company to acquire an American company when it purchased Getty Petroleum Marketing in 2000.

Despite his success, Vagit Alekperov has faced challenges, especially in the context of international sanctions. As part of the governmental responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand imposed sanctions against him. These measures led to Alekperov stepping down and resigning from the board of directors of LUKoil in April 2022, after 29 years.

However, Alekperov’s influence extends beyond the oil industry. He has demonstrated a passion for philanthropy and social entrepreneurship. In 2007, he founded The Foundation “Our Future” to promote social entrepreneurship in Russia. He has pledged to transfer his significant stake in LUKoil, over 20% of the company, to a specially created charitable foundation according to his will.

    Personal Life

Apart from his business ventures and philanthropy, Alekperov enjoys numismatics and has amassed an impressive collection of coins.

Born in the post-Soviet era, Alekperov quickly climbed the ladder of success in the Russian business world. Starting as an engineer in the oil industry, he eventually became the CEO of Lukoil. His meteoric rise to power and immense wealth set the stage for controversy and allegations of unscrupulous activities.
