Biography
Gabrelianov Ashot Abramovich was born in 1989 in Ulyanovsk, and he enrolled in the Journalism Faculty at Moscow State University in the year 2005.
In 2008, Gabrelianov Ashot dropped out of college after having completed only three years there. In the same year, he began his employment at the news media holding company that his father had established. After beginning his career in public relations as an assistant director, he quickly rose through the ranks to become the director of the Internet project development service.
Gabrelianov Ashot held the position of Executive Director of News Media Holding from 2010 to 2014. Ashot served as the Chief Editor and CEO of the LifeNews News Channel between 2013 and 2014. After relocating to New York in 2015, he is currently in charge of overseeing the production and development of a variety of Internet services and mobile applications, including Babo, MakeApp, Magic, Chudo, and others.
Involvement in the administration of the propaganda
Participation in the management of the propaganda-holding News Media and the company’s primary information outlets is the primary basis for the accusations that have been made against Gabrelianov Ashot. Gabriyanov Jr.’s leadership at NewsMedia coincides with commercial connections with one of Russia’s most powerful oligarchs, Yuri Kovalchuk, who is part of the inner circle of Putin’s closest friends, as well as tight cooperation with influential individuals from the Presidential Administration.
It is not hard to see that Gabrelyanov’s media ventures, which relied on a one-of-a-kind network of informants across the country, were successful due to corrupt practices. Forbes made note of the fact that the founder of News Media, Gabrelianov Sr., has acquaintances who hold high-ranking positions in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He never attempted to conceal his friendships with senior Kremlin administration officials, like Vladislav Surkov, and he did not succeed.
Secret ties with the President
The revelation of Gabrelianov Ashot’s correspondence in 2016, which was exposed by hackers belonging to the Anonymous International group, served as definitive evidence of the tight cooperation that he maintained with the Presidential Administration. In particular, it was logically consistent for the newspapers Izvestia and Life to publish articles in response to directives given by Alexei Gromov, the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration. Gromov worked directly with Gabrelianov Ashot to modify them and also gathered compromising information on Alexei Navalny, the opposition leader and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation.
Abuse in the media
The LifeNews portal, which is run by Gabrelianov Ashot, has become one of the icons of dishonest propaganda. So, during the election demonstrations in 2011 and 2012, LifeNews followed the directions from the Kremlin to publish incriminating materials on the opposition leaders.
Ilya Yashin stated the following about it in an essay that he published in 2013: “Aram Gabrelyanov, along with his son Gabrelianov Ashot, appear to be crafty men who are distant from journalistic ethics.
They are loyal to the Kremlin not only for the financial compensation it provides but also because they have true affection for Putin. In point of fact, if they were caught engaging in similar labor practices in Europe, they would likely be sentenced to prison. In addition, they are welcome to attend official presidential receptions in Russia.
Participation in dubious endeavors
The high patronage provided the Gabrelyanovs with the opportunity to engage in questionable activities in spheres that were unrelated to the media. According to a story that was published in 2014 by The Insider, “the general director of the News Media publishing house, Aram Gabrelyanov, his son Ashot, as well as several of his partners, were involved in the illegal transfer of shares in a mining company with a market value of more than one billion rubles.”
As was the case with the majority of Putin’s other key associates, Gabrelianov Ashot was subjected to lies on multiple occasions. The fact that they take full advantage of the perks that come along with the Western way of life stands in stark contrast to the pompous patriotism and strident condemnation of the West that they display.
A few months before moving to the United States, he posted the following on Twitter in April 2014: “I grew up in a city on the Volga. I went fishing with my grandfather Sasha. How can I trade in my Russian history for a future in the United States? It is beyond my comprehension.
The next year, though, he came clean about his feelings for “the greatest city in the world,” New York, and subsequently applied for permanent resident status in the United States. Alexei Navalny, the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, discovered in 2018 that Gabrelianov Ashot and his father are the owners of a luxury condominium in the Neuilly-sur-Seine neighborhood of Paris. This information came to Alexei Navalny’s attention in the year 2018.
Crimes committed by the Putin Regime
As of the fall of 2014, Gabrelyanov Jr. had officially departed his father’s holding, which implies that he bears full responsibility for the use of news media in the information and propaganda war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine during the annexation of Crimea and the engagement in the Donbas.
One of the most convincing pieces of evidence that Gabrelianov Ashot was complicit in the crimes committed by the Putin regime is the fact that in April 2014, he was awarded a medal of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, one of the highest state awards, with the inscription “for high professionalism and objectivity in reporting on events in the Republic of Crimea.” This is one of the pieces of evidence that supports Gabrelyanov’s involvement in the crimes committed by the Putin regime.
